As we celebrate Veterans Day this Sunday, we pause in remembrance of those who have proudly served our country in the U.S. military. Originally known as “Armistice Day”, November 11th was chosen to annually memorialize the end of hostilities between the Allied powers and Germany ending World War I, which was then regarded as “the war to end all wars”.
Thanks to President Woodrow Wilson, because he was the one who proclaimed the first commemoration of what would become an official national holiday. He said: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations...”
Therefore, we remember and honor those who stood up and put their lives on the line to defend the country from very real threats to our national security. They served us in such a way that we could enjoy the freedom with no fear and anxiety today. Let us offer this prayer for them.
Dear Lord, today we honor our veterans, worthy men and women who gave their lives to serve our country. We pray that you will bless them for their service to preserve our country’s heritage for all of us. Bless them for the sacrifice they made for their many contributions to America’s victories. We thank them, we honor them and we pray that you will watch over them and bless them with peace and happiness. Amen
On our parish side note, we welcome this Sunday our three candidates who are continuing their journey in the RCIA. They are: Mike Snyder, Jeffrey Lowers and Heather Heckman. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit may lead them to a deeper relationship with God and discover the richness of our faith.
